KCSSA 10m Air Pistol summer season starts here

Got off to a bad start with three low scoring cards. I just couldn't get the grouping to center on the target. Lots of high right and low left flyers, often on the same card!

STATS
-----

Session score(s): 67 + 74 + 76 + 75
Session total: 292 ex 400
Session Average: 73.0

Session Std. Dev: 3.5

Running Average: 76.1
Running Std. Dev: 5.81

BC: 1970

The only positive was that the standard deviation of the session was better than the current 'running Std. Dev.' The summer season comp stats are:

Comp stats
----------
KCSSA running average: 72.3 ex 100
KCSSA average change: -5.7
KCSSA Std. Dev: 3.86

WKRL running average: 78.2 ex 100
WKRL average change: +1.2

WKRL Std. Dev: 4.26

Finally got the round 10 and final position results for the West Kent Rifle League (WKRL) winter season 10m air pistol competition:

I'm pleased with the fairly consistent final average, but the Std. Dev. shows that there were some cards scoring way above and below the average.

Summer season starts here

As is usual with postal shooting competitions, the new season has started before the final results of the previous season are in.

The winter KCSSA 25yd short-range prone rifle competition was a travesty. Shooting comps for the first time at my new club, I failed in a big way to match my 'shot for average' cards. Prior to the winter season starting, I shot a 96.4 ex 100 average. This is around my previous club average. So far so good!

But, (and my excuse is the pressure of [a] shooting for a new club, [b] shooting on a new range, etc, etc), with only cards scored to round 6 confirmed, I am currently sitting on a disappointing 92.5 ex 100 average. That's a decrease of 3.9 on the submitted average. Very poor. My days in the 'A' team were numbered...

With the summer season KCSSA 25yd short-range prone rifle competition starting with a submitted entry average of 93.8, I have so far shot a 93, 93 and 95. This makes me -0.1 down on average overall, but with a tight 0.94 standard deviation.

The cards were shot in one session using my iron-sights Anshutz 1913, a Hammerhead sight extension, rearsight diopter (and switching between yellow and red filters as the light went up and down), and Eley Team (blue box) ammuntion.

Needless to say I'm in the 'B' team this season!

Season end approaches

A cold, crisp, windless day for shooting 10m Air Pistol outdoors. For the first time EVER, I actually fired a snatched shot that missed all the scoring rings! The result was a way below average 71 ex 100 on my WKRL round 9 card. I think I've lost that round, unless my opponent NCR's!

After a break of one detail to recoup, I then shot the two 5-shot strings of the KCSSA R8 cards. A disappointing 39.1 ex 50 was then followed by a much more impressive, and average beating, 46.1 ex 50, for a round 8 score of 85.2 ex 100.

Comp stats
----------
KCSSA running average: 79.5 ex 100
KCSSA average change: +1.5
KCSSA Std. Dev: 4.78

WKRL running average: 78.5 ex 100
WKRL average change: +0.5
WKRL Std. Dev: 5.98

This means my overall stats for 10m Air Pistol are as follows:

Running Average: 78.3
Running Std. Dev: 6.47
BC: 2460

Pistol: Steyr LP10 [single-shot pre-charged]
Pellets: 4.50mm RWS Hobby

Cold temperatures

A break in the weather meant a trip to the range on Saturday morning for some 10m air pistol comp cards. I had planed to shoot enough, if possible, to clear me up to February due dates.

I started off with the West Kent Rifle League R8 card (1x10 shots). With the air cylinder at just under 80 bar, I shot a disappointing 75.0 ex 100.

Comp stats
----------

WKRL running average: 79.4 ex 100
WKRL average change: +1.4
WKRL Std. Dev: 5.70

This card knocked my running average for the competition to back under 80.0 ex 100

I then shot KCSSA R7 cards (2x5 shots). Started with a more impressive 44.1 ex 50, followed by a 35.0 with it's first shot being a lack-of-attention 4-ringer! This resulted in 79.1 ex 100, better than my average but could have been a possible 85-88...

Comp stats
----------
KCSSA running average: 78.6 ex 100
KCSSA average change: +0.6
KCSSA Std. Dev: 4.80

It's interesting to note that my standard deviation is better with the KCSSA competition where each rounds 10 shots are shot as two strings of 5, with a card change in between.

I then planned to shoot KCSSA R8, but the cold temperatures had affected the cylinder to gun chassis fitting, such that I could not unscrew the cylinder. I ended up taking the gun back home, setting it at room temperature for 6 hours, and then applying the very gentle use of some padded mole-grips.

Shooting outdoors when it's 5degC

Visited the range this morning to shoot several rounds of 10m air pistol competition cards. However, even with constant light levels and no cross wind, the 5degC ambient temperature meant that after only two cards (2 x 5 shots), I had to stop shooting as I started to lose sensitivity in my trigger finger.

Started off on card one with a 41.1 ex 50. All shots in the black, but one was a poor 7-ring snatched shot. The second card was a much more consistent 46.2 with 1 x 10 and 2 x V-bulls.

STATS
-----

Session score(s): 41.1 + 46.2
Session total: 87.3 ex 100

Running Average: 78.3
Running Std. Dev: 6.49
BC: 2420

This has improved my KCSSA competition shot average, but worsened my standard deviation with the much higher than average score on the second card.

Comp stats
----------
KCSSA running average: 78.6 ex 100
KCSSA average change: +0.5
KCSSA Std. Dev: 4.84

2 November 2016

First fullbore shoot for several years!

Joined Ramsgate & Dover RC at the MOD Hythe Ranges for a 300yds morning shoot on the Serial-1 range.

Lots of shooters and limited time, so with butt duties, I only managed to shoot two cards.

The first card was a 44.3 which should have been with 3/4min elevation and 4 1/2 min right windage.
The first sighter was very poor. I read the flags as gentle at 3 o/c, but when I arrived at the butts, I realised it was a lot stronger.

The second card was a 44.2 shot using the same elevation and windage I finished card 1 with. I should have dropped the elevation 1/4 minute to allow for the slight change in wind direction, also attention to the flag would have shown the wind slowly varying from 5mins right down to 3mins right.

STATS
-----

Session Scores: 44.3 + 44.2
Session Average: 44.3
Session Std. Dev: 0.07
Running Average: 41.37
Running Std. Dev: 3.42

This means that my current spread of scores with this rifle is as follows:

You can see when I have shot whilst tired!

Set-up
------

Rifle barrel: 30inch Kreiger @ 1 in 13
Rifle action: RPA Quadlock
Rifle rearsight: RPA Trakker with adjustable aperture
Rifle foresight: RPA ladder with Centra adjustable aperture
Rifle stock: Maskin laminated
Ammunition: RG06 155gns 'comp'

29 October 2016

Shot up to start of the new year!

On a glorious morning (13degC, no clouds, no wind), went to the Club and shot rounds 6 and 7 of the West Kent Rifle League's (WKRL) 10m Individual Air Pistol competition.

Card 6 was just below average, shots grouping slightly high and left. For card 7 things improved dramatically! Initially all shots were inside the 8-ring, with the 9th shot being an almost central V-bull. The excitement got to me and I rushed the 10th shot for a very disappointing (and missing the black) hole 'touching' the 6-ring (it's dodgy though and might gauge out as a 5).

STATS
-----

Session score(s): 76 + 88.1
Session total: 164.1 ex 200

Running Average: 78.3
Running Std. Dev: 6.48

With the card 7 score being so much higher than my average, it actually worsened my running standard deviation.

Comp stats

WKRL running average: 80.0 ex 100
WKRL average change: +2.0
WKRL Std. Dev: 5.83

Usual setup as follows:
