Season end approaches

A cold, crisp, windless day for shooting 10m Air Pistol outdoors. For the first time EVER, I actually fired a snatched shot that missed all the scoring rings! The result was a way below average 71 ex 100 on my WKRL round 9 card. I think I've lost that round, unless my opponent NCR's!

After a break of one detail to recoup, I then shot the two 5-shot strings of the KCSSA R8 cards. A disappointing 39.1 ex 50 was then followed by a much more impressive, and average beating, 46.1 ex 50, for a round 8 score of 85.2 ex 100.

Cold temperatures

A break in the weather meant a trip to the range on Saturday morning for some 10m air pistol comp cards. I had planed to shoot enough, if possible, to clear me up to February due dates.

I started off with the West Kent Rifle League R8 card (1x10 shots). With the air cylinder at just under 80 bar, I shot a disappointing 75.0 ex 100.

Comp stats
----------

WKRL running average: 79.4 ex 100
WKRL average change: +1.4
WKRL Std. Dev: 5.70

This card knocked my running average for the competition to back under 80.0 ex 100

I then shot KCSSA R7 cards (2x5 shots). Started with a more impressive 44.1 ex 50, followed by a 35.0 with it's first shot being a lack-of-attention 4-ringer! This resulted in 79.1 ex 100, better than my average but could have been a possible 85-88...

Comp stats
----------
KCSSA running average: 78.6 ex 100
KCSSA average change: +0.6
KCSSA Std. Dev: 4.80

It's interesting to note that my standard deviation is better with the KCSSA competition where each rounds 10 shots are shot as two strings of 5, with a card change in between.

I then planned to shoot KCSSA R8, but the cold temperatures had affected the cylinder to gun chassis fitting, such that I could not unscrew the cylinder. I ended up taking the gun back home, setting it at room temperature for 6 hours, and then applying the very gentle use of some padded mole-grips.

Shooting outdoors when it's 5degC

Visited the range this morning to shoot several rounds of 10m air pistol competition cards. However, even with constant light levels and no cross wind, the 5degC ambient temperature meant that after only two cards (2 x 5 shots), I had to stop shooting as I started to lose sensitivity in my trigger finger.

Started off on card one with a 41.1 ex 50. All shots in the black, but one was a poor 7-ring snatched shot. The second card was a much more consistent 46.2 with 1 x 10 and 2 x V-bulls.

Session score(s): 41.1 + 46.2

This has improved my KCSSA competition shot average, but worsened my standard deviation with the much higher than average score on the second card.

First fullbore shoot for several years!

Joined Ramsgate & Dover RC at the MOD Hythe Ranges for a 300yds morning shoot on the Serial-1 range.

Lots of shooters and limited time, so with butt duties, I only managed to shoot two cards.

The first card was a 44.3 which should have been with 3/4min elevation and 4 1/2 min right windage.
The first sighter was very poor. I read the flags as gentle at 3 o/c, but when I arrived at the butts, I realised it was a lot stronger.

The second card was a 44.2 shot using the same elevation and windage I finished card 1 with. I should have dropped the elevation 1/4 minute to allow for the slight change in wind direction, also attention to the flag would have shown the wind slowly varying from 5mins right down to 3mins right.

Shot up to start of the new year!

On a glorious morning (13degC, no clouds, no wind), went to the Club and shot rounds 6 and 7 of the West Kent Rifle League's (WKRL) 10m Individual Air Pistol competition.

Card 6 was just below average, shots grouping slightly high and left. For card 7 things improved dramatically! Initially all shots were inside the 8-ring, with the 9th shot being an almost central V-bull. The excitement got to me and I rushed the 10th shot for a very disappointing (and missing the black) hole 'touching' the 6-ring (it's dodgy though and might gauge out as a 5).

Winter season has started

At long last I am back in to shooting 10m air pistol competition cards!

The KCSSA and WKRL winter leagues are well under way, and as of this morning I have shot ahead up to, and including, round 5 (out of 10) in both competitions.

The Kent competition is 10 rounds of 10 shots per round, shot as 2 cards with 5 shots on each. The WKRL competition is 10 rounds of 10 shots per round on one card.

The morning first card was KCSSA 4/1 and it stank. usually my first card is fairly good, but today is was a wildly inaccurate 27 ex 50, with the next card KCSSA 4/2 being a much better 43 ex 50.

This set the tone from then on, with the KCSSA 5/1-2 cards scoring a combined 78 ex 100, and the WKRL R4 and R5 scoring 80 ex 100 and 79 ex 100 respectively.

8 September 2016

Good ex-400 practise session

The session started with a slow start; a 76.0 with the usual low left flyers. Adjusting the sights to move the group, I went 5 clicks up and 3 clicks right. The second card  was a 73.0 with an error causing a high right snatched shot in the 4-ring. I then adjusted the sights again to move the group 2 clicks right.

After a water break, the third card shot was a much improved 85.1, with six shots inside the 9-ring. This proved to be the best card of the day, but only just.

Card 3
Although slightly to the left, I decided not to adjust the sights prior to shooting card four. An almost as good 84.1 followed.  The group was reasonably central, so any non-centered groups from now on should be down to my feet positioned on the firing point.

Different pellets

A morning session trying some different pellets!

Shooting another 40-shot session, managed to shoot two cards way over average.

Card 1 [85.0] was shot using RWS Hobby pellets. This was the last card to be shot on the current cylinder (at <80bar).

Card 2 [88.2] was shot using Geco Diabolo pellets and a fresh cylinder (@ 200bar). These pellets are slightly larger than the RWS Hobby.

Card 3 [73] and 4 [64] was shot using Excite Econ pellets. These are a lot looser fit than the
Geco Diabolo and RWS Hobby pellets. The Steyr does NOT like these pellets!

Had I stayed with either the RWS Hobby or Geco Diabolo pellets, I could have ended up with a 330 ex 400 session.

As the Club stocks both RWS Hobby or Geco Diabolo pellets, I probably stay with the Geco Diabolo as they seem to be of a slightly better quality.

Another practise, another new pellet

Having usually shot with 4.49mm RWS R10 Match pellets, they are now far too expensive for my level of shooting standard. For the last few sessions I have been trying the much cheaper RWS Hobby pellets. These are slightly larger 4.50mm pellets that need to be checked when loading the ammunition box; I've found several with damaged skirts!

This pellet shoots about 25mm higher than the RWS R10. Today I bought a tin of the Geco Diabolo pellets from my club. Also 4.50mm, they seem to be of better quality than the RWS Hobby pellets. The second card shot today was with these new pellets. With flyers down to me, the Geco pellets seem to give a tighter group with 2 lots of keyholed shots. They are only slightly higher on the card than the Hobby pellet holes.

No pushed shots this session!

Disappointing practise

Another practise session completed. Again I shot too quickly for the 40 shots, finishing in just over 30 minutes.

On all  four cards, managed to push 3-4 shots low left for some reason. Also found that the 4.50mm RWS Hobby pellets, for which the Steyr is currently set for, shoot some 30mm lower than the 4.49mm RWS R10 Match originally used.

Practise, practise, practise!

Another 40-shot practise session completed on the outdoor range at Ramsgate & Dover Rifle Club. Using the new (cheaper) RWS Hobby pellets, I shot four cards, adjusting the elevation after card 1 (4 clicks down) and card 2 (2 clicks up), I ended up with the sights 2-clicks down (H) for the rest of the session.

Pistol: Steyr LP10 [single-shot pre-charged]
Pellets: RWS Hobby (unknown size - light weight @ 7grains)

Also adjusted the position of the trigger shoe. Originally at the rear of the rail, repositioned 2/3rds the way forward for card 3. Grouping opened up so for card 4, moved the trigger back slightly. Much tighter grouping with trigger shoe at 1/3rd the way forward..

2nd shoot

My second shoot at the new club was a 40-shot session shot on a very warm and humid day. With the normal set-up:

Pistol: Steyr LP10 [single-shot pre-charged]
Pellets: 4.49mm RWS R10 Match

I started  poorly with only a 68 scored. Put three shots in to the 5-ring, due to poor trigger control and follow through. Amended the windage for the second card and then the elevation on the third card. By the fourth card the humidity was getting to me, and even with a water break between the 3rd and 4th cards, I shot another poor card.

The final results were poor, but the two 'good' cards were better than average!

First shoot at a new club

With membership of a new club agreed, this morning was the first time I was able to shoot 10m Air Pistol for over a year. In 90 minutes I managed to shoot the required 60-shots, at 10 shots per card.

The first card was the best of the six for grouping; all 10 shots were in the black. The third card was marred by a snatched shot in the 2-ring after holding on aim too long.  It wasn't until the 5th card that I managed to put a shot in to the X-ring. Repeated the mistake with a snatched 4 on the 5th card (along with a 10 and an X).

Final card was the best score of the session with a 81.1
